"What if this doesn’t work out?" "What if they don’t like me?"
Have you ever asked yourself those questions—then stopped short of doing something you truly wanted to try?
That, right there, is something we call negative thinking. These are thoughts that sound like truth in the moment but are often rooted in fear, insecurity, or past experiences. And more often than not, they keep us stuck.
🧠 The Power of Thought
Negative thinking shows up as self-doubt, pessimism, or assuming the worst about yourself, others, or the situation. It’s something many of us struggle with—even if we don’t fully realize it.
As a therapist, I’ve seen how powerful these thoughts can be. I’ve also seen how untrue they often are.
Because of them, people turn down job opportunities. Avoid new relationships. Miss out on joy-filled experiences. All because of thoughts that are based on the worst-case scenario, not reality.
💭 But What If It Does Work?
Here’s where things shift. When we start to challenge those thoughts—when we ask, “But what if it does work out?” we start to open doors.
What if they do like you?
What if you can succeed?
What if this is the start of something good?
That one shift—from fear to possibility—can be the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.
💡 A Lesson from Edison
It’s said that Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before he created the first successful lightbulb.
Can you imagine if he’d stopped at attempt number one? What if he had let negative thinking take over?
We wouldn’t be lighting up our homes the way we do now.
